The Ultimate Firearms Destination for the Gun Lifestyle

First Look at Magpul Gloves: Core FR Breach, Patrol, and Technical

If you're one of those who pay attention to the tactical or firearms industry you are no doubt familiar with Magpul and their line of weapon accessories and polymer magazines. You might also be tracking the Magpul release of an apparel line at SHOT Show 2016. Within that line of shirts and outerwear there is a line of gloves aimed at competing with such longstanding heavy industry hitters as Mechanix and Oakley.

With six different models of glove varying from hard knuckle breaching gloves, lightweight flight gloves to a heavy set of leather ranch gloves there seems to something for everyone. I was recently able to get my hands on three sets of their more tactical oriented gloves; the Magpul Core FR Breach Gloves, Patrol Gloves and Technical gloves.

Eyes on Magpul Gloves: Core FR Breach, Patrol, and Technical

by John Darwin

The Breach Gloves are very similar to any set of Oakley hard knuckle gloves. Though featuring a hard knuckle they have very good dexterity and feel unlike others I have tried in the past. If you are working around chain saw or other breaching tools, working on a fire engine or big diesel tractor you know the pain of a slipping wrench, missing a sledge swing or otherwise beating your knuckles into an immovable steel object. The hard knuckles on these gloves will reduce any pain felt during these situations and at around $70 are fairly priced.

Features include:

• Leather palm with a double layer of digitally textured reinforcement provides better comfort under firearms recoil along with Kevlar FR thread for strength and flame resistance

The Patrol Gloves feel like more of an everyday use glove. They offer enough protection to your hand while being lightweight and giving you a large amount of dexterity for more intricate tasks. Priced under fifty dollars they are perfect for your average carbine course, SWAT school or picking up steel at your local rifle match. These gloves are durable enough to last while not feeling like you’re wearing an oven mitt.

Although the Magpul Technical Gloves are the lightest of the line, they still offer a decent amount of protection with good dexterity. Unlike the other two gloves I tried these have an elastic wrist instead of a Velcro strap. While feeling like your sliding on wetsuit gloves, once on they are very comfortable and you don’t have to worry about a strap coming undone during use. The Technical Gloves retail for $24.95.

Features include:

• Lightweight, durable glove without compromising dexterity
• Tough synthetic suede palm and inner finger construction for wet or dry grip on all firearms
• Narrow, minimalistic forefinger for easy access and better control of firearms triggers
• Terrycloth backed thumb area to quickly remove fogging on hunting optics and glasses
• Ambidextrous three-finger touchscreen capability
• Elastic wrist closure keeps out debris
• 100% synthetic
• Subdued branding for better camouflage and concealment

In our modern media age with tablets being used for everything from looking at imagery, mission planning, controlling drones, updating your Facebook feed, or pulling data off of ballistic computer applications, the ability to interact with electronic devices is a must. The Magpul gloves give you the ability to be able to operate touchscreens without having to remove your gloves. With all three sets I was able to operate and use my iPhone, Samsung Tablet, as well as a tough book computer. While probably not ideal for speed texting the gloves worked as advertised and allowed me to use them all without issue.

Though many of us were initially dubious about the expansion of their staple goods, Magpul continues to impress with the new items. They're releasing reasonably priced, high quality and usable products. The gloves are comfortable, no rub spots on the inside, easy to get on and off, and fit well stuffed in the back pocket of your favorite pair of range pants. Magpul did a very good job designing a good glove system with a variety of palm thickness and protection allowing the end user to select gloves based on his or her use instead of forcing you to use one glove for everything. Whether you are working on a big diesel, running your local carbine course or installing fence on your back 40, Magpul has thought of you and built a glove for your application.

I will continue to use and abuse these gloves as they earn their place in my kit. If they fail or I start to encounter limitations I'll advise on here.
