This is the “Backpack Chair” by DEFCON Gear. Like the camp stools we used in the Scouts so long ago, the metal legs on these small packs scissor open so you can plant our fat or tired ass on them (which is why, with SHOT imminent, I snatched one up to try out). The integrated chair seems pretty sturdy so far — it's withstood my frame in a SAPI vest with plates and helmet on, and it's surprisingly comfortable to wear.

We'll see if that holds true over the longterm.

As you can see there's a good size primary compartment with a place to stow a hydration pouch. It comes with a carrying handle, hydration port tube, some smaller pouches and pockets to organize and an morale patch/ID panel on the front. The manufacturer rates it at 300lbs or more. I intend to see just how far over 300 pounds it will go this week just as soon as I run into The Mountain that Rides Zeke Stout of Sonoran Desert Institute.

This seems like a great idea as much for range use as for camping, though with the metal frame on there I'm not entirely sure I'd want to hump more than a few miles with it in the field. I'll advise next week how it did walking miles with it indoors.

It retails for about 60 bones. Learn more here.

What is the NSSF SHOT Show?

The NSSF SHOT Show (Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show) and Conference is an annual event held by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Typically attended by thousands of people from all 50 states and over a hundred countries, it is (quite rightfully) described as the “…world's premier exposition of combined firearms, ammunition, law enforcement, cutlery, outdoor apparel, optics, and related products and services.

Imagine the Worlds' Fair, but packed with everything from mini-guns and every breed of body armor, bows and boots; from eye pro and ear pro to optics and ordnance, socks to swords…you get the idea. If you'd like to see a sampling of the companies who will be showing at this year's SHOT, there's a live map right here, though it doesn't reflect the organizations set up elsewhere, in hotel suites, etc.
