The Multitasker Tools “Multitasker Series 3” – ingenious, rugged design

“The Multitasker is a tool you should never be without. They advertise it as a toolbox in your pocket and that is an apt description. This is without a doubt the coolest of the cool guy tools.”  Pat Rogers, EAG Tactical

Toolbox in your pocket indeed – Rogers' description largely reflects that of literally everyone I know who owns one. The Multitasker (selected as industry partner with Magpul Dynamics back in April) is just hands down one of the greatest maintenance tools available for AR shooters. Note that it is  unabashedly AR15-centric; you won't get nearly as much use out of it if you're an Kalashophile, or if you spend time on other rifle breeds. I'll be honest, I probably don't use mine to the greatest extent of its capabilities – much as I personally cannot shoot to the mechanical capabilities of my rifles. Many of you reading this won't have that problem, though.

“It's not for camping or pitching a tent,” advises the designer. “We are proudly AR-centric. All other utility is coincidental. I didn't want to compromise the ability of it to work on a gun.”

Asked if there would ever be an AK version, he shook his head. “Probably not, for a number of reasons.”

Multitasker Series 3 by Stickman -2In development for over a year, the Multitasker Series 3 is the latest and greatest iteration of a great series (with regard to the AR tools; I'm not counting the Emerson collaboration). The designer's favorite piece is the knife blade, because it addresses what he describes as the greatest shortcoming of the Series 2. In the Series 3 the knife has been moved tot he outside of the frame, whereas previously it had to fit inside the leaf spring. By moving it to the outside the designer was able to make the knife blade bigger and put the liner lock on the proper side (the left side vs. right side of the blade). On the previous iteration – which is still a very good tool, by the way – you had to use your right thumb to push the tab out of the way while using the left hand to retract the blade. This one is more like a typical folding knife, with a smoother action because the back spring is no longer putting pressure on it.  They also added a half inch hex for scope rings, and everything is inboard. so you don't have to pull attachments from a pouch.

The pliers on the Multitasker are the only ones I'm aware of that use wire EDM; they use CNC machining and 2 pieces of billet steel (they don't use a mold). The pivot bearing is CNC machined from 3 parts instead of being pressed in, and the bent carbon scraper is useful as hell (it can be used as a bolt override too).  The threaded stepped-pin punch can be used with Otis cleaning kit accessories and castle nut spanner wrench is a dual purpose 1/4″ slotted screwdriver.  There are actually a lot of very well thought-out features. It will be easier to show you a good review video (see below).

Multitasker Series 3The Series 3 is certainly an incredible leap forward from what we used to work on our rifles back in the 90s (did anyone else keep old dental tools in their OD cleaning kit back in the day?).  It certainly has a place on a rifleman's Christmas list – at $140 – $180 it's a little expensive, but a one-time purchase well worth the money. Multitaskers are available in a number of places, including F3 Tactical's store, on SKD Tac, at Weapon Outfitters and other places.

Key Features:

  • CNC machined pliers (D2 tool steel)
  • Non-slip G10 scales (Black or Tan)
  • 3/8” hex for LaRue mounts
  • 1/2” hex for scope rings
  • Dual lug M4 castle nut spanner wrench / bottle opener + screwdriver
  • 3/32″ pin punch with 8-32 male thread for OTIS cleaning kit compatibility
  • Radiused tip carbon scraper
