A few hours ago, at a rally in Portsmouth, NH, presidential candidate Bernie Sanders announced his support of Hillary Clinton as the Democratic candidate for POTUS.
We can all rest easy. Although the foundation of the elderly statesman's campaign was based on fighting “the establishment”, and though he has previously decried Mrs. Clinton as unfit for other (amid other unflattering descriptions), he did manage to bow out of the race and continue his crusade for reform without sacrificing his dignity or selling out.
Just kidding. He did, most of us figured he would, and if the move wasn't chicanery it definitely falls into the perfidy category — and let's face it, it's not something the DNC has a monopoly on.
The (bought and paid for?) Sanders endorsement of the woman he not too long ago all but reviled probably comes as no surprise most anyone reading this, but we're relatively sure it has disappointed at least a few of those who genuinely believed in his message. Most will probably console themselves with the idea that she is “better than the alternative” and quickly forget everything he's said and she's done.
A couple of months ago Sanders told us,
“I don't believe that she is qualified [to hold the office of POTUS], if she is, through her super PAC, taking tens of millions of dollars in special interest donations.”
Said Sanders in his address today,
“…the profound lesson that I have learned from all of that is that this campaign is not really about Hillary Clinton, or Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders, or any other candidate who sought the presidency. This campaign is about the needs of the American people and addressing the very serious crises that we face. And there is no doubt in my mind that, as we head into November, Hillary Clinton is far and away the best candidate to do that.”
Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, whose support continues to grow with disaffected and dissatisfied members of both parties, immediately reached out to former Sanders supporters.
Johnson has passed 11% in the polls as a third party candidate and shows no signs of slowing down, though large numbers of potential voters are apparently unaware he's an option.
There's more of course. Climate change, living wage, the appointment of SCOTUS justices, immigration reform, Medicare, the Affordable Care Act, the “rigged” economy, our crumbling infrastructure and other significant issues.
Nothing about the results of the FBI investigation into her conduct, but that's such a minor issue, why would he?
Here's a video of the whole sordid thing if you're a masochist. You can read Sanders' remarks here.
