Congratulations To All Who Completed Best Ranger

The staff of RECOIL congratulates Sgt. 1st Class Raymond M. Santiago and Sgt. 1st Class Timothy S. Briggs, winners of last week’s 2013 David E. Granger Best Ranger Competition. Likewise we extend our respect and admiration to Sgt. 1st Class John M. Gendron and Sgt. 1st Class Joshua Horsager of the 75th Ranger Regiment, who awarded second place, as well as Sgt. 1st Class Samuel E. Leritz and Staff Sgt. Christopher Brousard (also representing Ft. Benning’s 75th Ranger Regiment).

24 of the 49 teams who started the grueling 3-day, 60-hour event made it across the finish line. All of them were recognized at an awards ceremony at Marshall Auditorium at Ft. Benning’s McGinnis-Wickam Hall.

Colloquially knows as Best Ranger, the David E. Granger Best Ranger Competition was envisioned in 1981 as a “Ranger Olympics”. Using events designed to exhaust competitors both mentally and physically while challenging their technical proficiency to the utmost, the goal of Best Ranger is to identify the best two man Ranger team in the Army. There are typically over two dozen events in the competition schedule, including such tests as the Prusik Climb, Weapons Assembly, Urban Obstacle Course, Water Confidence Course, and Day- and Night-Orienteering.
