“We deal in lead, friend.”
They're remaking one of the great all-time Westerns: The Magnificent Seven. Thankfully, this remake looks like it has potential — though adequately filling the boots of Steve McQueen, Yul Brynner, James Coburn, Charles Bronson and the others certainly sounds like an impossible task.
Here's the first trailer for the new movie.
The original 1960 Magnificent Seven film was itself a Western/cowboy incarnation of Akria Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. It is considered to be a classic, and just 3 years ago was chosen for the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress). According to WV Costanzo's account Close Up: the Magnificent Seven Kurosawa was so impressed by the movie he presented director John Sturges with a katana. The Seven Samurai preceded The Magnificent Seven by just 6 years and starred such noted Japanese actors as Toshiro Mifune, Takashi Shimura and Minoru Chiaki. It has been lauded as one of the single most influential films in history.
Please Gan, Gozer and Unicron, let this not be another Red Dawn style debacle.
From the description:
Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven. With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.
