Pay attention to what's going on around you. Having a sense of the atmospherics might keep you from having to win the gunfight you never got into in the first place.
That's an axiom that should not require a reminder, but it does.
I appreciate Matt Graham style of instruction (and not just because he's got the voice of an epic narrator). He is extremely switched on and teaches what I'd describe as an ethos vs. biomechanical skill sets. Perhaps most sarticulates things much differently than you might expect from a “tactical instructor”. I was privileged to spend a few days on the range with him recently – watch for the AAR from that and some video soon.
If you're interested in taking a Graham Combat course, the schedule is online here. There's a civilian offensive vehicle course coming up in Virginia in September (the 26th), followed immediately by his personal security and environmental manipulation course (ARAINDROP) in D.C. on the 27th and 28th. What he articulated in that video above is just an incremental part of ARAINDROP. The A and the R in that acronym stand for Anticipation and Recognition; it is a systematic, comprehensive, holistic approach to situational awareness, mindset and threat mitigation. That might seem counterintuitive, but I did not choose the word holistic lightly.
Here's another look at where Graham comes from as an instructor. This attitude (in fact, this very video) is why I determined a few months ago that I wanted to train with GC. Doing so was a great decision. If you're looking for any sort of posturing, chest-thumping, righteous declamations about This Is How To Do It or tales of Desperate Adventures Downrange and Derring Do you won't get them. Graham teaches to individual students in a quietly humorous but ruthlessly pragmatic fashion. If that appeals to you, check out Graham Combat.
Graham Combat is on Facebook here, on Instagram here and on YouTube here. Matt also just started a blog, which should prove to be interesting. You can find The Trade online here.
