SHOT Show 2020

New Cloud Defensive REIN Weapon Mounted Light

The new Cloud Defensive REIN is the next evolution in the Cloud Defensive lineup. Instead of the one-piece design of the OWL, the new REIN is a more scout-like design with a more familiar design.

The light head uses many of the same parts found in the Cloud Defensive OWL, the only real difference according to the company is the head is now threaded and has a slightly different shape. Cloud will be offering mounts for the light which has Scout style mounting points.

Interestingly, even though the internals remained the same, Cloud Defensive claims that the REIN puts out 8,000 more candella than the OWL with the advertised rating at 58k candella plus online. The information we received at the booth was slightly different though. We were told that the 18650 body REIN will do roughly 1350 lumens and more than 57k candela, the 18350 body will do more than 55k candela.

While testing a light on the show floor isn't telling, the beam pattern is identical to the OWL largely because they retained the same reflector, LED, and lens.

Run time for the REIN will depend on the battery you choose but we were given some unofficial estimates, the 18650 should run for about 90 to 100 minutes and the 18350 will give you about 40 to 60 minutes of runtime.

Cloud incorporates some interesting features that seem to make a whole lot of sense like their battery jack, a threaded insert that prevents battery bounce during recoil. The battery jack prevents the tailcap spring from becoming fatigued over time like on some other lights that have a bit of battery movement. The battery jack is especially important when you take into consideration the length difference between protected and non-protected cells, an often-overlooked factor.

The REIN will ship with a standard clicky type tail cap but can be upgraded to incorporate a tape switch by unscrewing the ring that retains the tailcap capsule and replacing it with one that has a tape switch wire built right into the tailcap capsule.

Cloud Defensive will be offering two different packages, one will set you back $310 and includes a Picatinny mount and the standard clicky tailcap capsule. The full REIN kit comes in at $360 and includes Clouds LCS and a pressure pad tailcap capsule.
