Options — we all want them. Whether it’s selecting the color of our phone case or determining the nutritional value (or lack thereof) in our foods, we place a high value on the ability to choose. While a pistol will always be our No. 1 concealed carry weapon (CCW), we have to look to other everyday carry (EDC) options. So, with this in mind, we cast the spotlight on some non-firearm self-defense tools that could serve well as backups EDCs. (Note: You should check your state, regional, and local laws to see if these tools are copacetic in your area prior to purchasing any of them.)

Pepper Spray

Make: Kimber America
Model: PepperBlaster II
MSRP: $40
URL: store.kimberamerica.com

Note: Kimber is known for its quality 1911s, but not all of its products shoot live ammo — the PepperBlaster II is the company’s latest iteration of its powerful pepper spray. This “non-aerosol pyrotechnic” device now has a grip for increased accuracy. Though just 4.2 ounces, it sprays at a reported 112 mph to reduce blowback on the user and to deliver eye-watering, mucous-producing, throat-burning results quickly.

Neck Knife

Make: SOG Specialty Knives & Tools
Model: Snarl
MSRP: $55
URL: www.sogknives.com

Note: If you like running light, compact, and discreet knives, the Snarl could be your option. This little puppy is barely longer than 4 inches, weighs just 1.9 ounces, and comes with a slim nylon sheath that can be carried around your neck or on your belt. The 9CR18MoV-stainless-steel blade connects to a short handle that resembles a knuckleduster.

Knuckledusters

Make: Triangle Krav Maga
Model: Hex Tool
MSRP: $45
URL: store.trianglekravmaga.com

Note: The brass knuckle just got its 2.0 upgrade. Grab the Hex Tool however you want and you’ll be holding it correctly. It’s coated with Cerakote for added toughness and comes in black, blue, flat dark earth, olive drab green, and red. Whether it’s sitting on your desk as a cool paperweight or in your hands during a nighttime jog, the Hex Tool can give you a tactical edge.
