When a top finish in a shooting competition is sometimes decided by as little as a tenth of a second, every advantage counts. Often referred to as space guns because of their futuristic look, Open-Division raceguns are modified and tuned for the ultimate in competition performance. Raceguns are built to give the competitor a well-balanced gun that is quick to get on target and softer to shoot than stock guns. Organizations such as the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) and the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) have special Open divisions that allow shooters to field these supertuned pistols.

Rules vary slightly between sanctioning bodies, but many of the specifications that qualify a gun in Open Division are similar among the different series. In both the USPSA and IPSC, an Open-Division gun must be chambered in a caliber no smaller than 9x19mm (0.748 inches). Unlike other divisions, such as Production or Limited, a host of modifications can be done to an Open-class pistol, including compensators, gas ports, and optics. Also, there is no limit to the handgun's size or weight.

There are many great custom racegun makers. We take a look at one from Limcat custom products. The Limcat Custom Products Flashcat is the newest pistol in Limcat's Open line and features all of the latest technology you expect in a cuttingedge space gun. The Flashcat's new slant-cut design was executed for more than just looks. The slant cut moves weight to the compensator and away from the slide to reduce the slide's reciprocating mass. The goal was to create a pistol that is well balanced and shoots softly, while still being maneuverable. The Flashcat shoots 9mm Major. (If you're scratching your head wondering what that is, check out our sidebar, “Differences Between 9mm and 9mm Major.”) Let's take a closer look at this Open-Division racegun to see just what makes it perform.
