Happening Now: The Gambler 500

The Gambler 500 is a 3-day experience like no other. It’s coined as the “Impractical – Off-Road Navigation Adventure Challenge.” And it’s surely that and much, much more.

Started in 2014 as a why-the-hell-not vision to see how far you can gamble off-road with a beater car before it breaks down, the event has grown at a massive rate. This year, the Gambler 500 expects 1,400 cars. Participants convene in Chemult, Oregon before hitting the backroads and checking in at ten locations over the course of the weekend. There are no set paths that must be followed and navigation apps are a necessity.

“Since RECOIL first participated in the Gambler 500, the event has grown like crazy to where it’s now the world’s largest rally,” said RECOIL’s Iain Harrison, “It embodies our spirit of freedom, because the first rule of the Gambler is, ‘Don’t be a dick,’ the second rule is, well there isn’t a second rule, and cheating is encouraged. So if you have a cheap car on its last legs, load it up with your buddies and some camping gear and come join us at the most fun auto event ever.”

This year, RECOIL will be following and giving updates during the challenge of the teams from Sig Sauer, Noveske, and Salient Arms.

There’s more to the Gambler 500 than the camaraderie and competition– the organizers reward participants for cleaning up the trails. “We have huge dumpsters onsite as we host the largest trail cleanup in the world during the event,” Gambler 500 Organizers said, “please snap a pic of the debris you collect along your journey and post pics to Instagram tagging us along with hashtag #sonsofsmokey and we will be selecting winners for most debris, biggest debris, shooting pit cleanup and more.”
