West Virginia is arguably the most gun-friendly state for a reason; guns outnumber people here by a considerable margin. West Virginia University’s football team may struggle, but its rifle team certainly doesn’t. It should come as no surprise that Douglas Barrels, which has produced barrels for American Olympians and American snipers from Vietnam to GWOT, has been a quiet giant here for decades.

Douglas Barrels was founded in 1948. In the beginning, the company played the field based on personal knowledge and uniform service experience. From the outset, the core concept was to provide the best barrels made to the most demanding standards that would meet or exceed the most exacting specifications. To this day, Douglas maintains that standard.

Douglas Barrels is not outwardly flashy. From the road, you might not even know you’re in the right place. There are no big signs. It is innocuous.

Once inside, you are transported back in time. A German gunsmith would be right at home here. Many of the machines date to the 1940s. Pratt and Whitey, the same company that made engines and propellers for American fighters, bombers, and transports during World War II, made many of the tools still used by Douglas in 2026. These machines, although seemingly immortal, are monuments to the ingenuity of American industry, but they still require new parts and repair. The level of talent and knowledge at Douglas is such that the machinists can do so in-house.

Douglas Barrels starts the barrel making process from the ground up. The steel arrives in carefully refined but raw form. Only the knowledgeable or imaginative could see the long steel rods transformed into a remarkably precise part, the heart, in fact, of a precision rifle.

The process is then conducted as a fusion of man and machine. It is dependent on the ability of the machinist to know not only his product, but the machine that produces it. From a bar of steel to the business end of an M40A1 lies a considerable amount of handwork.

From bare steel rods to a perfectly finished barrel, the only computer-controlled CNC machine in the process performs barrel contours. However, they still have the original profiling machine on hand, and thanks to their machinists, it still works.

This is a procedure for the patient. Drills that create the bores move at what might be considered a snail’s pace, only an inch or two per minute. If you want a precisely aligned bore and barrel, this is the price. Each bit and each tool is kept in spec and constantly monitored for performance. No job is too small or too large. Calibers from .17 to .50 are turned out on a regular basis.

In some ways, that is what makes Douglas unique. Douglas keeps abreast of the latest developments and demands in ballistic performance and combines it with the knowledge of over 80 years of experience. Demanding shooters come to Douglas for barrels hunting rifles, competition rifles, sniper rifles, and just about everything in between.

Spend some time with the professionals in the shop, and this is quickly established. For those of you of a similar mindset who have an affinity for now legendary guns and calibers, you can’t help but notice all of the references to classic calibers: 30-06, 7.7 Japanese, 8mm Mauser, 416 Rigby, 375 H&H Magnum, and the others that are now the trademarks of legends past.

However, these are accented by the products of ballistic and field progress of the past decades.

Alongside the ever present 30-06, you will find .41 Great Lakes barrels for those who live in states requiring straight wall rifle cartridges for hunting. While 5.56/.223 dominate the precision rifle calibers for military clone orders, Douglas is at the forefront with the newest and most in-demand calibers, covering the complete range of 6.8mm and associated calibers designed to produce maximum ballistic advantage over range.

Although CNC machines have gained a foothold in the Douglas shop, many tasks are still done the old way.

In the words of Travis Asbury: “Everyone wants to shoot straighter, further. This will lead to bullet makers making bullets that need faster twist barrels. We have already tooled for faster twists in many calibers but are working our way into this with all calibers.”

This is achieved through experience and proven design. The Douglas button rifling process does not cut the grooves into the bore; it displaces the metal inside the bore. The result is a remarkably precise and consistent bore that produces unparalleled accuracy. In effect, what is being produced is the best handmade product made to current demands and ballistic specifications. Douglas also has an incredible track record to back up its name and performance.

Each barrel is treated with the same care from beginning to end. Each is made to the customer’s specification and endures a series of quality control processes. Douglas was an early forerunner in quality control, and each barrel is tested for consistency before it leaves the facility. This is why Douglas Barrels is still regularly approached by research facilities such as Aberdeen Proving Ground.

Heat treating is controlled in-house.

Douglas barrels have outfitted U.S. snipers for decades. Beginning in the 1960s, Douglas produced rifle barrels for American snipers. Douglas has made barrels for every U.S. sniper rifle from the M24 to the M40, beginning with Vietnam. To this day, one of the most popular builds according to the Douglas staff is Carlos Hathcock’s rifle. Where better to go than the company that made the barrels in the first place? If you are looking to build a perfect cone of your dream precision bolt gun, this is the place to start. If you have questions, they can help.

The proof of the pudding is in the shooting. Douglas employees regularly compete and their trophy wall is testament to the quality of their product.

The people at Douglas are shooters as well. The trophy wall in the shop has to be recycled from time to time, but as it stands, it’s about 70 feet long. The shop itself is a tribute to precision shooting. You can’t turn a corner without a target perforated at several hundred yards or a bit of nostalgia or current decal, flyer, and data sheet from some of the most legendary and well-known competitions and companies in the precision shooting industry.
