When it comes to outside-the-waistband duty holsters, Safariland is the gold standard. The company’s OWB retention holsters, especially the 6000 Series, have been trusted by law enforcement and military units worldwide for decades. However, inside-the-waistband holsters haven’t always been the company’s forte. In 2023, Safariland made a move to change that by partnering with Haley Strategic to release the modern, appendix-carry-friendly INCOG X holster series. More recently, they unveiled the latest variant of the INCOG series, the new minimalist INCOG XS.

We spent some hands-on time with the INCOG XS and headed out to the range with Travis Haley himself to test its capabilities and learn more about its features.

WHAT'S NEW WITH THE INCOG XS?

Much like the INCOG X, the new XS was developed in partnership with Haley Strategic and is constructed from rigid Boltaron polymer finished in a smooth gray microfiber suede wrap. By default, it’s compatible with red dot optics and cowitness-height irons. Its proprietary polymer belt clip includes an adjustable strut (i.e. a concealment wing) to fine-tune the grip tuck angle and reduce printing.

Unlike the X, the XS uses a single-clip design to occupy less belt real-estate. Every holster includes a parts kit with two clip options: the standard appendix-carry-oriented clip with integrated wing or a center-mounted LinXS (“links”) attachment system. This LinXS system offers adjustment for both ride height and cant, making it better-suited to 3:00 or strong-side carry. The LinXS system is also fully reversible for right-handed or left-handed use.

While the larger INCOG X offers an optional sidecar-style mag carrier, that’s not an option on the minimalist XS. However, we’re told Safariland is developing a standalone mag carrier to match the XS, which should be available in the next few months.

At launch, the INCOG XS is available for Glock 17 and 19 variants (including Shadow Systems and ZEV clones) as well as SIG P365 (including AXG Legion Gen 2 and XMacro). Model compatibility will be expanded soon, and snubnose wheelgun enthusiasts should rejoice, because we’re told a J Frame model will be coming in the near future. MSRP for the Safariland INCOG XS is $102.

AT THE RANGE

For the launch of this holster, Safariland invited us out to the range to do some live-fire testing. Our training block was led by Haley Strategic founder and CEO Travis Haley, as well as his Director of Training Jared Segraves. We were equipped with an XS holster, Safariland-branded Nexbelt EDC belt, and Gen 6 Glock 45 with Trijicon SRO. We ran about 300 rounds through it over the next few hours at the range.

Training began with slow and deliberate draw practice, then ramped up the speed through Haley’s Delorean Drill. To start, we drew and fired one round in as close to 5 seconds as possible — an agonizingly long time that left us feeling like we were moving in slow motion. After a few reps, the timer was decreased to 4 seconds, then 3, 2, 1.5, and finally 1 second. While a sub-second draw from concealment seems imposing to many shooters, this gradual acceleration drill reframed our perception and made it feel easier than we expected.

Subsequent drills included quick draws from the INCOG XS holster before moving and shooting. Our final drill of the day was a timed competition-style sequence that involved running forward, laterally, and back uprange while engaging various steel and paper targets, plus a mandatory reload halfway through. The new INCOG XS concealed well and kept our draws quick and seamless. It also never felt uncomfortable, even during positional changes and sprints.
