At SHOT Show, Dark Storm Industries released its precision machined and matched 7075-T6 billet receiver set called the Variant 1. In addition to going on a little bit of a diet, the receiver set featured eliminated the use of roll pin and replaced them with set screws as a way to prevent people from scratching their receiver during assembly.
The aesthetically pleasing lines caught the eye of a few individuals from a prop house in New York City tasked with outfitting movies and TV shows. The result was DSI’s new Variant 1 rifle which was introduced at NRA Indy 2019. DSI explained that the prop house specifically requested that it come in any color other than black because dark rifles are notoriously difficult to see on screen. An attractive tungsten cerakote was selected.
The Variant 1 features a match grade, heat treated nitride barrel available in a 1:7 or 1:9 twist rate topped off with DSI’s competition compensator (which was also introduced at SHOT this year), a free float MLOK handguard, ambidextrous controls, Magpul CTR and a Houge over-molded grip. In addition to being available as a rifle, DSI is also offering the Variant 1 as a pistol or SBR.
Those in ban states don’t need to drool over their keyboards about another rifle that they won’t be able to own. As with other DSI offerings, the Variant 1 rifle is available in configurations for all 50 states. DSI explained that they would offer a featureless Variant 1 rifle or a version with a fixed magazine.
DSI is direct to the public, meaning that Variant 1’s can be ordered directly from them. Customization is also possible through DSI’s custom shop. The rifle comes complete with a transferable lifetime warranty and has a suggested MSRP of $1,695.
