Sounds counter intuitive, but that's just what happened recently. After being awakened by a clamor outside, Alaska resident Jim Landess looked out his window about 03h30L and found himself eye to eye with a brown bear. True story. The bear had been pounding on the house. Jim cracked off a couple of warning shots from his .45 ACP Hi-Point pistol and that, combined with his dog raising hell, convinced the bear to leave. Unfortunately it came pack, and was apparently up on the porch by the door. Fearing it was attempting to come through the door, Landess moved to an upstairs outside deck and from that vantage point put 7 rounds into the animal. The bear “went crazy on the porch for a few seconds”, then ran approximately 50 ft. from the house before expiring. Landess then notified Alaska state troopers. Interestingly, Landess had owned the pistol he used for just 3 weeks. He'd apparently bought it to take fishing. Says Hi-Point, “This July 2014 true story was related to Charles Brown of MKS Supply, LLC, the marketer for Hi-Point Firearms, by Jim Landress in Sterling, Alaska. Jim likes his not-so-pretty but effective Hi-Point pistol a whole bunch. In fact, he purchased the Hi-Point just three weeks prior to carry while fishing – it is bear country! The bottom line is handgun bullets don't know or care whether they are launched from a tough, reliable, accurate $200 handgun or one that costs $3,000.” You can find Hi-Point online at http://www.hi-pointfirearms.com/.
