My old boss Matt Cox has recently reported that DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) has conducted a successful live fire demo of a “smart” .50 cal bullet. He advises that EXACTO (Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance Program” demonstrated viable in-flight guidance after the bullet was fired; to wit, the round were adjusted while headed downrange toward the target. EXACTO's objective is to “improve sniper effectiveness and enhance troop safety by allowing greater shooter standoff range and reduction in target engagement timelines.”
Says Cox,
“The system combines a maneuverable bullet and a real-time guidance system to track and deliver the projectile to the target, allowing the bullet to change path during flight to compensate for any unexpected factors that may drive it off course, officials say.”
