Over the years we've seen a number of different approaches to dry fire. When trawling the dungeon of SHOT we got a brief hands-on with the Dvorak Air Recoil System (ARS).
The Dvorak ARS is a CO2 powered conversion kit for your existing firearm with a replacement barrel, recoil spring assembly, and magazine insert. When installed, the ARS fully cycles the slide with each trigger pull, simulating recoil. Furthermore, the ARS has a laser that actuates, allowing for the use of laser-sensitive targets or really annoying your cat.
While we wouldn't go so far as to say it felt 100% real, it was far closer to reality than airsoft or other gas-powered guns we've used.
Of course, the gas required to move a full slide is significant; we're told you get about twenty actuations between gas ups with a pistol. The ARS can be recharged from the muzzle when installed using common paintball gas.
Of course, the usual suspects are available for the ARS such as Glock and S&W, along with some mildly more esoteric pistols such as the CZ75.
There are two series of the ARS, one with red accessories and the other with blue. The blue is their LEO/agency line and costs significantly more ($2,500) than the red we featured here ($400).
