SHOT 16: Tailor Made for Hunting – Gemtech Tracker

While not all states allow hunting with suppressors, the number of states where you can legally do so has been steadily increasing. This has brought a renewed focus and interest in suppressor usage for hunters. To that end, new from Gemtech is a multi-caliber hunting suppressor: the Tracker. Rated for 300WM and below, the Tracker tips the scales at a mere 11.3 oz. While no, you aren't going to be getting a rifle caliber machinegun-rated suppressor for under 12oz, the Gemtech Tracker wasn't designed for that in the first place. They claim it's the first suppressor made specifically for the hunter.

The Tracker is so lightweight because it's constructed of titanium and aluminum. Weight is an important consideration for hunting for two reasons: Ounces equal pounds, and this is especially true if you're carrying a rifle for miles on end. Traditional hunting barrels have slim profiles for that same weight savings reason. However, these lighter barrels are more prone to point of aim and point of impact shift if a heavy suppressor is mounted. The reduced weight helps mitigate this shift.

Gemtech decided to forgo their common quickmount attachment system and instead opted for direct thread mounting.

Here's what they have to say about it:

Gemtech's new Tracker is the first suppressor made with the hunter in mind. At 11 ounces it doesn't add bulk to the already weight conscious hunter and only adds a little over 7 inches to the overall length of the rifle once threaded on the barrel. You can still stalk your prey without getting hung up on the brush and low hanging trees. The Tracker is suitable for most major hunting calibers and is adaptable to most rifles. Hunting with the Tracker offers hearing protection, improved accuracy, faster follow up shots and best of all won't panic wild game.

Don't kill your hearing, kill your dinner.

As a neat little Easter Egg, the pattern along the base of the Gemtech Tracker is morse code dash-dash-dot for the letter G.

What is the NSSF SHOT Show?

The NSSF SHOT Show (Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show) and Conference is an annual event held by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Typically attended by thousands of people from all 50 states and over a hundred countries, it is (quite rightfully) described as the “…world's premier exposition of combined firearms, ammunition, law enforcement, cutlery, outdoor apparel, optics, and related products and services.

Imagine the Worlds' Fair, but packed with everything from mini-guns and every breed of body armor, bows and boots; from eye pro and ear pro to optics and ordnance, socks to swords…you get the idea. If you'd like to see a sampling of the companies who will be showing at this year's SHOT, there's a live map right here, though it doesn't reflect the organizations set up elsewhere, in hotel suites, etc
