INCOMING: Glacier Microlite 500 Packable Vacuum Bottle

There are those who'd argue it's important to stay hydrated, that cocoa is better served hot, and that red solo cups are a terrible choice of container for the beer you take backpacking. We absolutely agree with the latter, in no small part due to quantity limitations and the fear of a beer foul on the trail. That's why why these new Glacier Microlite 500s caught our eye — they'll keep your adult libations cold, if that's the way you prefer them, and they'll protect your beloved beverage from the cruelties of the outdoors. No spillage, no concerns about breakage, no more worrying about your whiskey.

More preoccupied with the nectar of the gods? GSI Outdoors tells us these packable vacuum bottles will keep your coffee hot for hours.

Glacier Microlite 500 Packable Vacuum Bottle

SPECS:

Rated for 8 hours of heat or cold retention, the manufacturer advises these bottles are one third lighter than similar designs (at 7.9 ounces they may be right, making them very packable). They're stainless steel, with walls that are 28mm thick (well, thin), making them roughly equivalent in size, or smaller, than single wall plastic bottles.

A push-button, flip-top cap locks for transport.

Contains 17 fluid ounces; 500 ml vacuum bottle.

2.9 in. x 2.9 in. by 9.2 in.

The product description on their website says it's suitable for “Groumet Backpacking.” We're not entirely sure what that means…pretty sure Groumet was one of the dwarves with Bilbo at Erebor wasn't he? They might just as easily mean gourmet. Doesn't really matter — the bottles look like a good choice for hiking, camping and smuggling three or four really good Old Fashioneds out of the bar.

Anyway,  it beats drinking from the firehose.

If you haven't visited the GSI Outdoors website, you should. Make sure to read their history; the bit about the Canadian trappers and the confused, drunken moose might surprise you.
