German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Retrievers, etc. What do they have in common? They are large working dogs with a plethora of gear to choose from. If your family K9 is one of the smaller breeds, however, your selection of gear is probably substantially less complete (and likely less robust), typically coming as it does from one of the big box pet stores.
Seeing the lack of cool kit for his own Boston Terrier, the founder of KiloNiner (www.kiloninerpets.com) made his own. With a love of dogs and over 15 years of experience creating hard-use nylon gear for elite war fighters, the KiloNiner team set out to create a line of stylish and high quality gear for our smaller 4-legged friends.
Designed and manufactured in the U.S. to MilSpec standards, one of KiloNiner’s first offerings is the Compact K9 Tactical MOLLE Dog Vest. Sized Small, XSmall, and XXSmall, the vest comes in either Black or Multicam. Pictured on Beagle Trinity is the Small vest, which has enough adjustment to go a bit bigger or smaller.
The adjustable neck, chest, and belly straps secure the harness to your dog using high grade ITW and Duraflex hardware. Comprised of mostly heavy duty mesh, the vest is lightweight and breathable, with 2 rows of PALS webbing and 2 rows of loop Velcro for your favorite morale patches.
In Trinity’s case, she has nametape and reflective squares.
At the top is a tubular carry handle and D-ring attachment points to help you deploy your little K9. Not content with leaving things alone, I added a paracord wrap to the handle for more grip and emergency use.
With additional gear in the works, KiloNiner’s current offerings include the Vest, Small and Large K9 Shemaghs in various patterns, Snap-Hook Keychains, and Morale Patches. Seen here for the first time are a few samples of their upcoming product line: Leash, Folding Water Bowl, and “Dump Bag” Dispenser. The water bowl folds up neatly and is retained with a strip of Velcro, and uses snaps to create a bowl when open. Although the bowl and dispenser come with a carabiner for attachment, I ran the Velcro strips through the PALS webbing to secure to the vest.
After a week on the road with the Compact Vest, Trinity couldn’t be happier. Worn for hours at a time, the vest proved to be comfortable and unrestrictive. Most importantly, Trinity also received her fair share of compliments for her style.
