The mail call at RECOIL JHQ was a good one. This is the very latest specimen of Smith & Bradley Rogue Edition Field Watch (please forgive the crude imagery). The Atlantis is the Smith & Bradley flagship timepiece, designed from the ground up by S&B's lead designer Jerommie Smith. All Rogues are handbuilt to order — none of them are on the shelf, which is why you're going to wait at least 2 weeks to get one. Assembly, testing, and waterproofing of a Rogue is an exhaustive process; even an experienced watchmaker can only build 2 during a typical work day.
That, and the materials used to build it, are no doubt why one of these watches goes for a thousand bucks brand new.
I don't know about other people, but if I had a watch that cost a grand (and I don't — well, I didn't) I would want treat it like a porcelain heirloom. Jerommie says that is completely unnecessary.
“Beat the shit out of it,” he told me yesterday when I talked to him. “Take it into any environment you want, you'll never ever need to worry about it.”
Okay then. Be careful what you ask for.
Says S&B,
A watch is nothing more than a paperweight if it cannot hold up under the pressure of the outdoors. As such, the stainless steel case back and anti-reflective sapphire crystal combine to proved the Atlantis will full 200 meter water resistance.
The Atlantis, while easy on the eyes, is truly a fully functional dive watch and features a screw-down crown with a knurled crown for easy function and stem winding no matter what the setting. Like all great diving watches, the Atlantis also features a uni-directional bezel with fully embossed numbering. The bezel also features a matte finish.
At the heart of the Atlantis is the ETA 2824-2 movement. No cheap plastic movement holders here either, we use DLC -coated brass to keep the movement secure. This is a robust movement that will stand the test of time in a diving watch while maintaining a high level of accuracy and reliability. Simply put, it is the industry standard.
More to follow — and more news soon from S&B. Apparently they have something coming that Smith says will “change everything” when it comes to timepiece illumination.
