Ruger Releases Security 9

Ruger recently announced the release of the newest 9mm pistol, the Security 9.

Named in honor of their Security Six revolver, the Security 9 is a DAO internal-hammer fired compact 9mm pistol. It's 4-inch barrel and 15-round capacity put it squarely in the self-defense or compact duty pistol market. The decision to make the Security 9 a hammer-fired pistol gives it a feel much more akin to the LCP than its striker-fired cousin, the Ruger American pistol.

We had a chance to fire this gun at a recent Ruger media day held at Gunsite. It's noticeably thin grip frame makes it ideally suited to concealed carry, and a number of holster manufacturers have molds for it already. Having said that, the frame as so thin that during strings of rapid fire the team members in attendance had some issue keep a firm grip on the gun. It tended to want to twist in the grip some. We found the slide very easy to manipulate, and were fully capable of racking it with a two-finger grip on the slide.

The trigger features its own safety bar, in addition to the thumb safety. The trigger press is…well…a DAO trigger press. We didn't have the change to gauge it and give you a specific weight. But if you're used to striker-fired guns the Security 9 trigger is longer with more noticeable stacking. The reset point is also further out than we'd like. But it goes bang consistently and is far from the worst thing we've put our trigger finger on. Sights are fixed ball-in-a-cup style that look vaguely familiar. We didn't like them the first time we saw them and we don't like them now. But alternate options will be available both through Ruger's webstore and the aftermarket. The gun ships with two polished metal magazines. Their floorplates are plastic and flared slightly to improve removal under duress in the case of a clogged up mag well.

With an MSRP of $379, we envision a street price closer to three bills on a good sale weekend. For the price point the Security 9 offers great value for a pistol of this size and capability. See more here
