Ryder 9 Ti: SureFire’s First Pistol Suppressor

We shot SureFire’s SOCOM 2 suppressor on the Accuracy International rifle featured on page 72 and were impressed by its performance. So, when their rep asked if we’d be interested in getting some time with their newest model, there was very little arm twisting involved.

Bottom line up front: it’s a modified K baffle design, using a titanium tube and end caps for reduced weight. The baffles themselves are stainless steel, which should mean they last just about forever, and in the event of erosion or baffle strikes can be individually replaced by the manufacturer. SureFire claims that flats machined on the outer tube reduce weight and allow for a better sight picture. The first part of that sentence is demonstrably true (although whether the savings are significant or noticeable is up for debate). We were unable to verify the second in the limited amount of time we spent with it. The Salient Arms Glock 17 we used as a host was equipped with both a Trijicon RMR and suppressor-height sights, so lining up the irons was a non-issue.

Throughout our (admittedly short) evaluation, the Nielsen device fitted to the Ryder 9 Ti’s end cap worked well — recoil was not intrusive and the gun functioned without a hitch, indicating that the piston was well-tuned to the job at hand. While our 115-grain test ammo was less than ideal, the can did a commendable job of reducing muzzle report and blast, allowing us to shoot without hearing protection. Available in both ½-28 and 13.5x1mm left-hand thread pitches for U.S. and European pistols, SureFire also offers Glock barrels by ZEV Technologies with the same thread options. This means that if you own, say, a SIG SAUER P226 with a factory threaded barrel, you can get the same setup on your Austrian pistol and not need to swap out the mount.

Finished in high-temperature Cerakote available in three different colors (black, gray, and dark earth), the Ryder 9 Ti is a good-looking suppressor, and its $800 price point is in line with or a little below comparable offerings from other major muffler companies.
