This year at Shot Show I had the opportunity to sit down for a one-on-one conversation with Discover Courage (DC) Co-Founders Jay Manty and Way Lin.
Discover courage is non-profit volunteer run charitable organization that provides uniquely tailored outdoor-focused programs for Special Forces community members, whether past or present.
“Our goal is to foster personal growth, stress recalibration, health and welfare and to optimize professional and personal success,” explains Jay Manty, Discover Courage President and retired 26-year Navy SEAL veteran and SEAL Team Command Master Chief.
Discover Courage has worked hard to partner with some of the biggest names in the firearms and fly-fishing industry such as Kimber, Leupold. LL Bean, Nautilus and just recently the Mako Group who donated $5000 during Shot Show 2015.
Discover Courage’s Board of Directors, Board of Advisors, and Executives serve 100% voluntarily without any compensation whatsoever and over 90% of every donated dollar goes directly supports its’ programs.
I asked both founders what makes DC unique and how they execute their programs to benefit our militaries SF guys. Simply put, Mr. Manty and Mr. Lin have a huge passion for firearms and fly-fishing and they have created tailored getaways for the communities they serve. Each getaway it tailored to parlaying the special skills of SF members – especially constant vigilance, situational awareness, patience, focus, detail orientation, physical training, routines, improvisation, and trust in team – into non-lethal, yet challenging outdoor pursuits characterizes the cornerstone of Discover Courage programs.
The SF community that it serves is a close-knit family and those on the outside of the community do not often understand the burden of confidentiality associated with service. A life characterized by unrelenting responsibility, patriotic commitment, constant training, frequent and prolonged deployments, inimical operational environments, and the nature of SF work may result in unique personal and professional challenges.
