U.S. Army Combatives: Warriors

This badass video was recently released about the U.S. Army Combatives 2013 tournament and some of the competitors. The video is entitled Warriors (rightfully so) and includes some compelling interviews. Among those featured are Jeff York, Tim Kennedy and Master Sergeant Carl Haskins of the SOCP program. In addition to fighters' insight there is a lot of awesome footage from various matches.

The U.S. Army Combatives School at Fort. Bragg used a combination of wrestling, boxing, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and adapted it for combat applications.

“The mission of the U.S. Army Combatives School is to train Leaders and Soldiers in close quarters Combatives in order to instill the Warrior Ethos and prepare Soldiers to close with and defeat the enemy in hand to hand combat.”

The main fight the film features is that of Captain Jon Anderson, two-time combatives champion in the 170 lb. weight class, and Staff Sergeant Josh McLean. The two talk about previous wins and losses, routine, training, the purpose of combatives, and at the end of the video you see the final showdown.

Competitor Captain Jon Anderson says,

“Combatives builds the total warriors concept. We train specifically on using our weapons for far distance engagement, a variety of weapons systems, but inside that range 2 meters and less you have to use your mind and your body. And thats what combatives teaches, is the willingness to close with your enemy, to bring your fight to your opponent.”
