At SHOT Show, SIG SAUER announced a serious push into the airgun world, displaying some exacting counterparts to their most popular firearms in CO2 powered, .177 or .22 pellet-gun form. While it’s not uncommon to see airsoft or licensed toy replica versions of major manufacturer’s firearms, they are usually licensed in “look and feel” attributes, but not necessarily in operating function or even weight. SIG, however, has launched their ASP (Advanced Sport Pellet) pistols and rifles, together with a full line of accessories and ammunition. These are intended for use as much by serious trainers as those looking for some fun plinking. Matched directly to original model specs in weight and balance, these are authentic feeling units that allow for low-cost, year-round indoor or outdoor shooting.
The lineup includes the iconic P226 and the newer P250 pistols, as well as the MPX and MCX long guns — but since National Firearms Act rules don’t apply to airguns, “long guns” is a bit of a misnomer: the carbines are paperwork-free lookalikes of SIG’s short-barreled-rifles and submachineguns.
The semiautomatic carbines feature a novel 30-round capacity magazine, which has the pellets loaded first into a belt, which is then wound inside the magazine housing. The RPM™ (Rapid Pellet Magazine) Pellet Drive System is the industry’s first encapsulated belt-fed pellet magazine, and is capable of feeding 30 rounds downrange in 3.5 seconds.
Both carbine models have Picatinny rails in addition to flip-up, adjustable front and rear sights. Optics are an available option as well: there is a SIG red dot sight package for the MPX, and the SIG MCX can come in either a scope package featuring a 1-4×24 scope with fast focus and a mil-dot reticle, or a red dot sight package.
The SIG MPX .177 caliber shoots up to 600 feet per second (fps), and the MCX model delivers velocities up to 750 fps. The heavier .22 caliber pellet versions are a little slower at 475 fps and 525 fps, respectively.
On the pistol side, the SIG SAUER P226 and P250 semi-auto ASP air pistols shoot pellets in .177 caliber and feature realistic blowback action of the metal slide just as the original centerfire models do. Both models have an auto decocking feature for enhanced safety, a 16-round rotary magazine, rifled barrel, front blade sight, and fixed rear sight. Accessory rails on the P226 and P250 also allow mounting of lasers or lights. The P226 .177 caliber shoots up to 510 fps and the P250 .177 caliber – up to 500 fps.
The guns are well supported with a full line of reactive targets, SIG-branded CO2 cartridges, and SIG various lead-free and lead copper-jacketed pellets.

The NSSF SHOT Show (Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show) and Conference is an annual event held by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Typically attended by thousands of people from all 50 states and over a hundred countries, it is (quite rightfully) described as the “…world's premier exposition of combined firearms, ammunition, law enforcement, cutlery, outdoor apparel, optics, and related products and services.
Imagine the Worlds' Fair, but packed with everything from mini-guns and every breed of body armor, bows and boots; from eye pro and ear pro to optics and ordnance, socks to swords…you get the idea. If you'd like to see a sampling of the companies who will be showing at this year's SHOT, there's a live map right here, though it doesn't reflect the organizations set up elsewhere, in hotel suites, etc.
