Meanwhile, in Detroit it is now apparently possible to train on a 2-way range.
Bill Kucyk of Action Impact Gun Ranges has put a transparent ballistic wall across an indoor shooting bay so individuals training can perform shoot/no shoot exercise at live role-players who might also shoot back.
“It is the next evolution of training and it's as close to real as you can possibly get,” he says, and you can see the pucker factor in the video.
Says Oswald Leslie of Action Impact,
“It's one thing to stand on the range and shoot at a target, but when you're confronted with a person and your brain is going; you're thinking; you're talking; it's a whole different scenario.”
This is certainly different from using marker cartridges, though of course the educational objectives are necessarily more limited.
Says Kucyk,
“That's the value of this training. So that it can stress you, find a way to correct you so that in a real-life situation perhaps it will save your life. When I say I want to save lives I am not kidding. I want to save officers' lives and I want to save civilians' lives.”
As with anything involving training and live fire, this will draw criticism as much as it does approval, and there's probably some merit to both sides.
Is it unsafe? That probably depends on what that wall is made of, what they're shooting and how often they switch it out. Maybe it's stupid, maybe it's the greatest thing to come along since moulage and Simunition, I haven't decided yet — but either way I'd like to train there.
