I first saw the Windham Weaponry SRC-308 at the 2014 SHOT Show. One of the things I immediately noticed was that it was not significantly heavier than an equivalently configured AR15 in .223. The question I had though was is it reliable? I’ve tried several .308 AR platforms over the years and most were far more ammo sensitive (to put it politely) than their .223 brethren. Windham Weaponry was kind enough to send one to us for evaluation. My goal was to see how reliable the rifle was with a wide range of ammunition out of the box.
When I received the rifle I cleaned the bore to remove any debris remaining from the manufacturing process. I mounted my Aimpoint M4 in Bobro mount to the rifle and zeroed it at 50 yards with Privi Partisan .308. My group at that range was one inch. I fired 40 rounds in zero and initial test fire. Part of that round count was loading 10 shots one at a time and testing for bolt lock back to ensure the rifle was getting enough gas. For the first part of the SRC-308’s evaluation I took it to the 2 Gun Action Challenge Match. Karl Kasarda, the match director and I would both use the rifle for the match to asses it’s reliability and how it’s ease of use stacked up against traditional .223 platforms.
The SRC-308 exhibited no malfunctions during the match with a wide range of ammunition. Karl Placed 1st in Tac Scope and 3rd/55 Over All having never shot the rifle before. I placed 2nd in Tac Scope, and 4th/55 Over All. Our scores were 8 seconds apart. The handling of the SRC-308 was very similar to shooting a .223 AR15. The main difference we noted is that we had to accommodate for a slightly longer shot to shot rhythm of the bolt carrier group cycling. Recoil was not much worse than a carbine gas system AR15. Muzzle blast of course was more with the .308 cartridge.
I continued to the SRC-308 for the next several months in more matches including the MGM Targets Ironman 3 Gun. More to come in part 2.
