Gear Spike’s Tactical Micro Folding Backup Iron Sights Steven Kuo March 20, 2014 0 COMMENT Spike’s Tactical has released a new set of micro folding backup iron sights for AR15 rifles. They are very compact and extremely light — the lightest we’ve seen — tipping the scales at a mere 1 ounce for the rear and 0.8 ounces for the front. The front sight features an HK-style hood, elevation adjustment, and a post with a sharp tip. The rear sight has a small and large aperture, windage adjustment, and an elevation drum for 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600 meters. The aluminum bases and uprights are hard anodized 7075-T6, steel parts are 4140 Chromoly with nitride finish, the cross bolts are titanium (and hollow with T-25 torx heads), and the thread inserts are stainless steel. The sights flip up and down securely, but they do not lock in place in either position. The elevation and windage adjustments are finger-adjustable with positive detents. The rear sight has a threaded insert with a small aperture; unscrewing and removing it reveals a large aperture for close-range work. At that point, the tiny insert is a loose piece and easily lost, so switching back and forth between apertures is not too convenient. This is the tradeoff for achieving such light weight and low profile. However, we might have been willing to accept a little extra weight to provide a spot to screw in the small aperture insert when not in use. Also, we could have done without the white color fill on the branding, though that’s personal preference. All in all, we found the sights to be quite thoughtfully designed and well machined — these are very, very nice sights indeed. Spike’s Tactical has priced their rear sight at $99 and the front at $95. The natural comparison for these new Spikes Tactical sights are two highly-regarded alternatives — the Magpul MBUS Pro sights and the KAC Micro sights. Both are heavier (the KAC set by about 66%, the Magpul by about 75%); the MBUS Pro are comparably priced and the KAC are…well, if you have to ask… Spike’s Tactical indicated that they are receiving batches of the new sights on a weekly basis, so call them to order or check online at Primary Arms (front sight and rear sight listed separately).
