Atlas Bipod for the USSOCOM Sniper Rifle System

If a bipod is selected for the USSOCOM Sniper Rifle system it's probably pretty good. That’s why the Atlas Bipod has caught our attention.

Atlas Bipod the New King?

The Atlas Bipod–full name Atlas Precision Sniper Rifle (PSR) Bipod–is made by B&T Industries.

The Atlas PSR is one of several different bipods from B&T that have set a new gold standard. The entire Atlas collection is durable, intentional in its design, and can accommodate a variety of shooting profiles.

About B&T

B&T Industries, created in 1997, is the parent company to Accu-Shot Monopods and Atlas Bipods. Owner Kasey Beltz, an all-around friendly and warm-hearted guy, was an avid hunter and recognized multiple gaps in the market for better stability in shooting, both precision and otherwise. Since 1997, Kasey and his team have been cranking out new and innovative designs.

The first entry into the firearms world was the monopod, a simple and effective design with a single leg with height adjustments. The monopods offer rear support with gross and fine adjustments for stud- and rail-mount rifle stocks.

During the early years, Kasey and his team were actually selling the Harris bipod, a long-time popular favorite. Always the problem solver, Kasey felt there were multiple improvements that could be made, and thus the Atlas bipod was born. B&T has a wide array of monopods, bipods, and accessories. The pinnacle: having USSOCOM select their PSR Atlas Bipod.

The Atlas Bipod is aptly named, as it is sturdy beyond belief. Durable and mechanically easy to operate, the Atlas Bipod also has a lot of functionality and modularity. There are two variations we will look at, the BT10 V8 Atlas Bipod and the PSR Atlas Bipod.

BT10 V8 Atlas Bipod

The BT10 V8 Atlas Bipod is essentially the entry level bipod from B&T. Of the three variations they range in price from $219.95 to $279.95. As a comparison in price, most Harris Bipods are under $100.00, but not nearly as expansive in features or durable as Atlas.

The BT10 is comprised of 6061-T6 aluminum that is Mil-Spec Type III hard coat anodized and has heat-treated stainless-steel components.

The V8 can be mounted directly to any 193 style Picatinny rail. The base model is attached with two flat head screws, and the more expensive model can be attached using the included ADM-170-S lever. The lever makes for a very easy on-off capability. If making the purchase, why not spend the extra $50 to receive that capability.

The height range of the bipod is between 5 inches and 9 inches with 5 different leg positions to include 0, 45, 90, 135, and 180 degrees. This action to rotate the legs is extremely smooth.

One of the best features of the bipods is the stability in both the front and back rotated positions. The legs rotate forward 45 degrees, to bring the weapon lower, or can be rotated 45 degrees back to provide a good purchase for high angle shooting. Zero and 180 degrees offer practical storage to keep out of the way.

The Atlas Bipod can rotate 0, 45, 90, 135, and 180 degrees.

In terms of weight, the BT10 weighs about 12.7 ounces while a Harris bipod can be about 13 ounces. Keep in mind, there are numerous variations of both in terms of components or attachments that can alter weight.

An important consideration is the durability as it applies to weight. As a former end-user, I would accept some additional weight if it afforded me significant durability.

Atlas bipods also have interchangeable feet, depending on the terrain. Each bipod includes standard rubber feet, but if you are inclined you can purchase additional options. These include ski feet that are smooth, spike feet, claw feet, and spiked cleat feet.

One of the more important pieces of technology is what Kasey calls, “hold what you move technology.” Everything in the design of the bipod is intentional, and if you are to bump it, hit it, or bang it on something it’s not going to rip off or break.

The PSR Model

There are four variants of the PSR Atlas Bipod available from B&T Industries ranging in price from $259.95 to $339.95. The BT46-LW17 was selected for the USSOCOM PSR Weapons System.

When USSOCOM was putting together their Mk14 Precision Sniper Rifle, they liked what they saw with the Atlas BT10 V8 but wanted to increase strength and make some small changes. They worked directly with B&T to innovate further.

The PSR still has similar features in height range, weight, rotation, and modularity as the BT10 but with some improvements.

The BT46-LW17 is comprised of 6061-T6 aluminum, except the strengthened inner legs which are made from 7075-T6 aluminum. The legs are Mil-Spec Type III hard coat anodized and have heat-treated, stainless steel components.

This variance in material gives the PSR more durability than the BT10. The PSR is similar to the BT10 v8.1 but with non-rotating legs, stronger inner legs and fore/aft limiting bosses. If you are using the bipod rough-and-tumble, the PSR is probably the one you want. For bench/range and most PRS-style matches, a BT10 is fine.

The BT47-LW17 PSR is the variant with taller legs with a height range of 7 to 13 inches, but with that comes additional weight of about 15 ounces.

While more expensive than other commercially available bipods, I believe the juice is worth the squeeze. Atlas Bipods have both he durability and function to make the extra cost worth it.
