A wise man once said, “If you don’t vote, you can’t complain.” It seems that Bradon Herrera, also known as “The AK Guy,” is taking that a step further and is actually running for a seat in the United States House of Representatives.

No, really. He is.

Officially filed to be on the Republican primary ballot for the 23rd district of Texas, Brandon Herrera announced his candidacy last Saturday, Aug 12.

If you’re unfamiliar with the AK-loving Herrera, he has been around in the firearms community for a long, long time. Most of his fame is due to his AK-50 project, his years-long attempt to bring .50 BMG to the AK pattern.

The AK-50, a .50 BMG AK.

He also owns TheAKGuy custom AK shop and runs one of the largest YouTube channels for firearms, clocking in at just short of 3 million subscribers as of this writing.

Brandon Herrera is also a self-described hardcore gun rights advocate, and he actually walks the talk. While most firearm manufacturers balk at the idea of inducing any kind of interaction with the BATFE that isn’t legally required, Herrera testified against the BATFE at a recent oversight field hearing.

MORE THAN GUNS

While Herrera is obviously going to have the second amendment be a large part of his campaign, he also has a stance on other issues. His website, brandonherreraforcongress.com, lists gun rights, immigration, national budget, censorship, education, and abortion among the issues on which he is taking a public stance.

It also boldly states that Herrera is “a pure constitutionalist that believes in god-given natural rights which are protected by the constitution, not granted by government.”

While still early in his campaign, things such as the economy, energy, healthcare, veterans affairs, and the global climate are missing from his issues list.

VOTE

I won’t tell you who or what to vote for, but I will tell you that it’s important to vote. We are all a part of the process and shoulder some of the blame when the process fails. Voting is not only a right but a fundamental necessity for a healthy democracy.

From Washington to Florida, Texas to Minnesota, every American should be voting for what we believe in.

If you’re not registered to vote, find out how here.
