Cleckner Releases Long Range Shooting Handbook

If you are into rifles, you may already know who Ryan Cleckner from his YouTube series on the subject of Long Range Rifle Shooting or his articles in RECOIL Magazine. You might not be aware, however, that he just released his first book: the Long Range Shooting Handbook, now available for sale. From what we've seen of it so far (we haven't finished it yet) this guide will be as beneficial for those who need things broken down Barney-style as to those who are more experienced shooters and are looking to continue their education.

Ryan Cleckner is one of those types who has seemed to try a little bit of everything. He is currently a lawyer in his own firm and formerly filled the Government Relations Manager billet for the National Shooting Sports Foundation. A longtime precision rifle guru and sniper instructor, he was a Sniper Team Leader for the 75th Ranger Regiment (1/75), under whose auspices he attended both Airborne and Ranger School, the Special Operations Target Interdiction Course (SOTIC), the French Alpine Mountaineering Course CIECM (Le centre d'instruction et d'entraînement au combat en montagne), US Army Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC – where he was an Honor Graduate and Best Leader Award recipient) and other formal military training. He is a veteran of multiple combat deployments, is a university lecturer teaching Constitutional Law and is a former Vice President of the Remington Outdoor Company.

That YouTube series we mentioned ranges in content from such seemingly unassuming information as advice on cleaning products and accessories to more detailed guidance on what a shooter should focus on to make the best shot of their life. If the book is as good as the videos (and we hear it is) it's going to be one you'll want to consider for your library. You'll also want to take a look at such articles as A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Target and MOA vs. MIL.

Here’s some info about Ryan’s new book.

This is the preliminary book to help you understand fundamental concepts such as MOA vs Mils and external ballistics, that can be like a trusted resource at the range. Included are personal tips and best advice from Cleckner’s years of special operations sniper schooling and experience, and as a sniper instructor. If you are an experienced shooter, this guide will be a resource covering the principles and theory of long range shooting.

Iain Harrison, editor of Recoil Magazine said: “Whether you’re looking to dip a toe into the complex world of long range shooting, or you’re a seasoned shooter with years of trigger time, Ryan Cleckner’s book will prove to be excellent reference material. Well written and easy to understand, it covers all the essential topics that a well rounded shooter needs to master.”

Colby Donaldson, Host of History Channel’s Top Shot said: “Cleckner has a gift for teaching. I have repeatedly seen contestants on Top Shot and guests at Texas Triggers excel under his instruction. He explains seemingly complex topics in a tangible way that just makes sense.”

The Long Range Shooting Handbook is broken down into three main categories: What it is/How it works, Fundamentals, and How to use it. “What it is/How it works” covers equipment, terminology, and basic principles. “Fundamentals” covers the theory of long range shooting. “How to use it” gives you practical advice on how to implement what you’ve learned so far to make you a long range shooter.
