Wandering around SHOT Show you run into some interesting characters with some pretty cool gadgets. One of those guys that never seems to disappoint is Mike Vellecamp from V Nives. This year he came to the show with a C.R.A.B.
That is an acronym that stands for Cut, Rescue, Assist and Break.
This is a multi-tool like no other. It is based on a carabiner that you can carry in a sheath, clip to your belt loop, secure to a loop on a pack, pouch or even snapped on the go-to-hell-bar in your vehicle, bike, quad or ATV.
What we like best about it is that this tool is large enough to clench in your fist and it surrounds your knuckles with FRN (fiberglass-reinforced nylon) and stainless steel.
The included tools in this unit are a 2″ ruler, a pair of scissors that work extremely well and are under the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) legal length, an O2 wrench, a bottle opener, removable glass breaker, several screwdriver bits and both a vertical and horizontal driver built into the C.R.A.B.
We got to briefly play with each of the tools, but perhaps the coolest thing about the C.R.A.B. is that it is fully TSA compliant, meaning you can board an airplane with this handy item.
The C.R.A.B. is available in black, OD green and Safety orange. We think the orange makes the most sense as a rescue tool and will look much more innocuous than a black or OD green tactical version.
MSRP on the C.R.A.B. is $99 and the kit includes a small knife known as the Hermit Crab, which is not shown and is not TSA compliant.
The C.R.A.B. can be ordered from http://www.vnives.com.
The designer, Mike Vellecamp, has been in the industry for over 25 years and has worked with almost every production knife company in the United States and a few overseas. Chances are, at one point or another, you may have carried a knife he designed, ground or even made the Kydex sheath for it as he at one time made some of the first mass-produced Kydex sheaths for a large holster manufacturer in the US.
