First Round Pop (FRP) is something that is often discussed when silencers are the subject. As the name suggests, FRP is the invariably louder report that occurs when the first projectile is fired. This happens because the atmosphere in the suppressor itself is more oxygen rich before any combustion containment occurs. If you allow the silencer to completely re-oxygenate, you'll experience FRP again. Just how long this takes is dependent on the suppressor design itself.
While there's far less fuss about FRP with centerfire rifle cans, it's a completely different story when it comes to rimfire. We've heard all sorts of methods for mitigating FRP and even tried some ourselves–but how about having less of it in the first place?
Dead Air (read more about them here) set out to find which of the popular rimfire suppressors have the least FRP. They tested suppressors from SilencerCo, Liberty, Gemtech, Sig Sauer, Surefire, and yes, of course they included their own.
Each offering was fired through two different popular rimfire guns: The Ruger 22/45 and the S&W MP-15/22. The decibel reading was recorded and then compared. You may find some of the results surprising. Have a gander:
For those that are currently unable to watch the 2 minute video, here's the Reader's Digest version:
We should note that this was just a simple FRP test, and no, it wasn't independent. It doesn't go into (nor does it purport to) other features or details of each suppressor. However, we're sure similar testing will be repeated by others in the future, and we look forward to it.
