Guns FN Shows Prototype 6.5 Creedmoor Machine Gun at SOFIC Lynsey Davis May 21, 2019 Join the Conversation This year at the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC), FN America, LLC unveiled its new prototype for the 6.5 caliber MK 48 Mod 2 Machine Gun. This release comes on the heels of USSOCOM announcing last year, that after extensive testing, they would be switching to the 6.5 Creedmoor caliber in an attempt to broaden their long range capabilities. The prototype FN MK 48 Mod 2 6.5 Creedmoor features several of the latest upgrades for FN's series of light and medium machine guns. These upgrades include: – a fully adjustable stock that allows shooters to customize the length of pull and cheek height, – a locking charging handle, – double-notched sear, – improved handguard with 3-, 6-, and 9-o'clock positions, – improved bipod, – and a stronger feed tray latch that keeps the feed tray cover locked into place during reloads. Those already running the Mod 1 need not worry, according to FN, once development is complete, existing MK 48 Mod 1 models can be configured at the armorer level to the Mod 2 variant or newest caliber with the addition of the upgrade kit and barrel conversion. The improvements to the MK 48 were also incorporated into the M249 series and is in service with USSOCOM as the MK 46 5.56x45mm machine gun.
