Tonight's Friday Night Gun Porn will take a look at the some Daniel Defense rifles (DDM4v5 and DDM4v9) with the DD's Tornado™ finish. As you can see, Tornado is Daniel Defense's preferred shade of Cerakote grey, their second color option to be released this year (they announced Mil Spec + earlier this year at SHOT).
Is grey the new FDE? I think so. In fact, I think it has been for at least the last 18 months, and rightfully so (though I must admit to being a little wistful about our flat ODs “back in the day”). Grey is an excellent transitional color, in the proper hue when properly used, and not just in an urban landscape (although that is what initially comes to mind). It's certainly not new (feldgrau anyone?). In any case, in addition to the transitional benefit of grey over black as a “cosmetic upgrade” the addition of DD Tornado gets you a Cerakote finish instead of one that's just anodized for just a marginal difference in price. That might be worth it alone, though I don't think you can go wrong with any DD rifle. I've been shooting the hell out of my ‘Build Your Own DDM4' for a about 8 months now and it's yet to give me a single problem.
Tornado Grey rifles include the DD M4V5 and DD M4V9 LW. Other models will be available in the new color soon.
