Griffin Armament has done it again with the exciting launch of a new batch of next-generation rifle silencers. The biggest new innovation in these silencers is an active retention system known as the DUAL-LOK.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MOUNT

If you’re a suppressor fanatic or even just a casual user, mounting systems might give you some pause and a bit of frustration. Most of us try to get more bang for our buck and invest cautiously in a mounting system.

Some companies’ mounts have been known to fail, strip easily, or maybe even send a silencer launching downrange. Griffin Armament’s mounts are precisely machined, robust, and reliable. Plus, they function great as flash suppressors or muzzle brakes in their own right, regardless if there’s a can on the end.

All of Griffin Armament’s mounts and silencers are made in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Watertown, Wisconsin, and are backed by a perpetual lifetime warranty.

WHAT IS DUAL-LOK?

Most properly installed QD (Quick Detach) mounts are fixed into place using Rocksett or another form of thread locker. Some need to be timed, and, for all intents and purposes, this is what retains the can to the firearm.

In pursuit of government contracts, a lot of companies began adding a secondary locking collar as an additional method of retention. Some were great, others not so much.  Griffin’s DUAL-LOK family of suppressors goes the extra mile.

A precision tapered interface is machined directly into the body of the silencer itself, between the silencer and where it contacts the mount. This ensures a repeatable POI (point of impact) and accuracy on target and acts as the first locking feature.

On the outside of Griffin’s new silencers, you’ll notice a wave spring between the body and the locking collar. When unlocked, the bronze-colored tines are visible. Rotating the collar either clockwise or counterclockwise when the silencer is attached to the mount engages an internal pin that locks into an internal U-shaped notch. When locked into place, the bronze-colored tines are no longer visible, and the can is secure. This is the secondary lock.

As a whole, the DUAL-LOK mounting system is proven to be accurate, robust, reliable, and free of wear-prone metal on splines or ratchets. This results in a much longer trouble-free service life with minimal maintenance needed. Most importantly, it requires very minimal training. So minimal, in fact, that the previous paragraph explains it all.

The genius behind this is that the locking ring has three anti-rotation splines that prevent the suppressor from inadvertently detaching. According to Griffin Armament, the various muzzle devices integrate 60 built-in anti-rotation grooves. This lock is effectively doubled, taking into consideration the locking collar’s two locking positions.

These two locking positions are machined out of sync with each other by approximately 3 degrees, meaning there are 120 different locations for it to lock and engage. When the DUAL-LOK suppressor is firmly screwed onto the taper, the locking spline will be in the ultimate spot for maximum retention. When it’s securely in place, just one of these positions will lock.

This then allows the visible external wave spring to easily push the collar rearward and over the teeth or splines. Every time the shooter affixes the DUAL-LOK suppressor, they’ll find themselves returning the suppressor’s locking collar to the same position, thereby ensuring repeatable performance.

BEYOND THE MOUNT

Griffin’s DUAL-LOK family of rifle suppressors goes beyond this rugged and efficient mounting system. Each of the silencers demonstrated minimal flash signature due to the low-profile flash suppressor front cap, and POI shift was minimal-to-nonexistent.

The ECO-FLOW baffle design reduces blowback and minimizes that awful “gas to the face” syndrome suppressed shooters have experienced all too often. If, in addition to protecting your hearing, you’re concerned about respiratory issues and lead ingestion concerning gunfire, this is definitely a system for you.

The DUAL-LOK family of suppressors are tubeless, manufactured from 718 Inconel and 17-4 stainless steel. They’re built using state-of-the-art CAD design and laser welding, providing ideal construction. All of Griffin Armament’s assorted muzzle devices feature ¾-inch wrench flats for proper installation, removal, and timing.

DUAL-LOK SUPPRESSOR FAMILY

DUAL-LOK HRT-556

The DUAL-LOK system was initially developed for the HRT-556 model. This is a very short rifle silencer in 5.56mm that was never available to the general public until now. It was first designed for an elite Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) unit. As government entities increasingly asked for a secondary locking system, Griffin Armament began developing the DUAL-LOK for this express purpose.

When the final product proved to be a compact, highly durable, low-flash, and top-performing suppressor, Griffin decided to release it to the commercial market. It measures 5.9 inches in length and weighs 14.4 ounces.

Refreshingly for fans of AR pistols or short-barreled rifles, there are no barrel length restrictions, and it’s also full-auto rated.

Each DUAL-LOK HRT-556 ships with a Minimalist Muzzle Brake Mount.

  • Weight: 14.4 ounces
  • Length: 5.9 inches
  • Diameter: 1.5 inches

DUAL-LOK 7

Scaling up a little bit, the DUAL-LOK 7 is intended for 7.62 NATO/308 Winchester. This is a .30 caliber silencer with a tube diameter of 1.5 inches and an overall length of 7 inches. It weighs in at 12.6 ounces and is available in FDE or black. As it’s a .30 caliber suppressor, it’s rated for calibers as hot as 300 PRC and smaller cartridges such as 300 Blackout, 7.62×39, 30-06, 300 Winchester Magnum, 300 H&H, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6mm ARC, and so on. It’s full-auto rated and there are no barrel length limitations. Each DUAL-LOK 7 also ships with a Minimalist Muzzle Brake Mount.

DUAL-LOK PSR (Precision Suppressor, Rifle)

A Reflex Suppressor or an Over the Barrel Suppressor is a legacy design that hasn’t received enough attention in recent years. They make for a compact system, with some of the suppressor’s body and internal volume reaching back over the barrel. Not merely a relic of the Vietnam War era, these silencers were very popular with military snipers in both the U.S. Army and Marine Corps not only because they offered excellent accuracy but also showed minimal shift in projectile impact. Griffin used to offer two different Reflex designs years ago, but they were discontinued in 2016.

But that doesn’t mean that they forgot about them. On the contrary, Griffin Armament put in the R&D to make them truly new. Lighter, quieter, and more secure than the old generation, the PSR incorporates the Dual-Lok system along with ECO-FLOW baffles. Consequently, backpressure is extremely diminished when used with semiautomatic and fully automatic firearms.

DUAL-LOK PSR 5

The DUAL-LOK PSR 5 is designed for 5.56mm and measures 8.4 inches long but only extends past the muzzle by 4.8 inches. With a 1.5-inch diameter, the PSR-5 weighs in at 14.9 ounces. It ships with a Dual Port PSR muzzle brake mount.

  • Weight: 14.9 ounces
  • Length: 8.4 inches
  • Diameter: 1.5 inches
  • Materials: 17-4 stainless steel & 718 Inconel

LOOSE ROUNDS

All of Griffin Armament’s silencers in this series follow a central theme of being accurate, durable, and secure — and, of course, very, very quiet. The ingenuity behind the DUAL-LOK system takes Griffin Armament’s already excellent silencers to an entirely new level that can be appreciated by shooters of all stripes.

Shooting the DUAL-LOK line across a multitude of rifles and configurations further confirmed that they live up to their reputation. There was also some fun, and interesting setups tried, like the precision-oriented PSR 7 fitting well on an 11.5-inch barreled shorty M4.

The can bottomed out less than a millimeter in front of the fixed front sight post, which means you can’t go much shorter with it unless you have a custom gas system, but it worked here and makes for a sleek look. They deserve big kudos for reviving the reflex can design on their PSR subfamily.

Griffin Armament has taken their designs in a refreshing direction, making their already excellent cans even better.
