Learn More Orphans of the Storm, Inc. is a rescue animal shelter about 3 miles east of Kittanning, Pennsylvania (in Armstrong County) on Route 85. They've been around since 1969, providing temporary shelter to unwanted, abused and abandoned animals. They have a long history of matching animals with people looking to adopt them, thus providing a “forever home”, and also provide education to the public on such issues as humane and responsible animal care, the need for spaying and neutering and similar matters. They are a no-kill shelter, euthanizing animals only if it is too ill or hurt to recover, or if it is a danger to people or other animals. All animals currently awaiting adoptions can be seen here. As of this writing there are nearly 50, both dogs and cats, including a Rottie-Spaniel mixed breed puppy, Paddy (a male retriever mix), Harley (a male boxer), Johnni (a female pit bull terrier) and Shelby (a female beagle mix). They're open Monday through Friday and part of Saturday, closed Sundays and holidays and are always looking for volunteers, particularly for Sunday walking. In fact, their next volunteer orientation program will be Wednesday, May 18 at the Kittanning Library. Says the shelter, “Attendees will learn about the shelter's programs and volunteer training. Due to space limitations, reservations are requested. Please email [email protected] or call (724) 487-0011 to reserve your spot.” Orphans of the Storm is on Facebook here. For those interested in adopting a pet from Orphans of the Storm Shelter: Adopting A Friend We want you to find the perfect pet for your family, and become their forever home! To make sure the adoption is a good match, our procedure is: 1. All family members must come & meet the pet to be adopted. 2. The new family signs a pre-adoption questionnaire & agreement. 3. There is a three-day waiting period while we review/verify the adoption agreement, references. 4. The pet is prepared for his/her new home: spayed or neutered (if not done already); updated on vaccinations including an “8-Way distemper shot, rabies and bordetella; Advantage flea prevention, Avid (micro-chipped). DOGS are heartworm tested & stool checked, and wormed if needed. CATS have a four-way vaccination, and if over 12 weeks rabies vaccinated, stool checked & wormed if needed, leukemia & combo tested. To help defray these costs, there is an adoption fee for the adopted pets at our shelter. ALL ANIMALS WILL BE ALTERED BEFORE LEAVING THE SHELTER. You can support the shelter by purchasing items they need on Amazon here or by donating here. Also, May 12th (this Thursday) Orphans of the Storm is participating in the 2016 Day of Giving. Any donation sent to the shelter that day (between $20 and $5000) will be partially matched. Pennsylvania too far? Live in or near New York? Check out this organization.
