Leatherman Raptor – a Multi-Tool for Medics

While at the Border Conference recently I found myself in the shadow of a looming, crusty, bearded giant and looked up to see him giving me the evil eye. Thankfully I soon realized it was Leatherman‘s Todd Hibbs, a retired Army CSM, Leatherman VIP and excellent SME to talk to. We chatted for a few minutes and wound up discussing the Leatherman Raptor, a multi-tool for medics. The Raptor has been out for a while now but somehow I missed it, so I thought I'd share – while admittedly a niche tool it is nice and is definitely something you medics, Corpsmen, EMTs, etc. might be interested in.

Simply put, the Raptor is a set of folding trauma shears with additional tools built in. It features a ruler on the back of one blade to measure wounds, a ring cutter, a strap cutter than can be used both in the open or closed configuration, an oxygen wrench, glass break carbide tip on the back of the larger loop and a tie-down for use with a tether or “dummy cord.” Raptors are folded up very easily; you just push the indent where the handles meet the jaws, rotate the first loop in, turn the tool over and do the same on the reverse side. Carry it closed with a pocket clip or scabbarded in a Kydex sheath – in the latter case either closed up or “holstered” in the open configuration. A single, durable finger break will provide retention.

Hibbs advises me the Raptor will cut right through a quarter then turn around and slice easily through gauze. It has a 25 year warranty an is made in the USA; the Raptor will cost you less than a hundred bucks and is less expensive still for military and first responders.

Features:

420HC Stainless Steel Folding Medical Shears

Strap Cutter

Ring Cutter

Wound Ruler

Oxygen Tank Wrench

Carbide Glass Break Tip

MOLLE or belt clip “holster”

Detachable/Replaceable Pocket Clip
