Editorial National Guard Birthday Recoil Staff December 13, 2012 3 Comments, Join the Conversation Today marks the 376th anniversary of the military branch now known as the National Guard. It traces its origins to Dec. 13, 1636, when the Massachusetts General Court passed a law establishing formal militia companies to protect its colony. Those armed forces have evolved into the National Guard, which today serves the country in many ways — from providing natural disaster relief and bolstering homeland security to fighting wars overseas and launching international humanitarian missions. Happy birthday, National Guard. We appreciate your dedication and service to our nation! For more information, go to www.nationalguard.mil.
