New Red Dot Sights Coming from Sun Optics

Sun Optics recently became part of the CMC Triggers family of companies, and as you’d expect, it’s moving aggressively to revamp its product line. We met with Stephen Morgan, who was brought on board to spearhead the effort.

At TriggrCon 2019‘s range day, we examined two new prototype red dot sights. They both feature 2 MOA dots and will come with 3 mounts of varying heights. The smaller 28mm version has a dial to control the brightness, while the larger 33mm version has pushbuttons. Both will have three night vision settings and are manufactured in China. Battery life for the 28mm sight should exceed 50,000 hours, and the 33mm sight is expected to last less than 50,000 hours (due to the pushbutton controls).

Sun Optics decided to eschew capped elevation and windage dials, instead opting for flush slotted dials with strong detents, like the Trijicon MRO. Note the 33mm prototype has dials which sit proud of the housing — they’ll be flush on production units, as seen on the 28mm prototype. They say this simplifies everything, as the adjustments are easy to access and turn, there are no caps to lose, and the flush design and detents ensure the dials won’t unintentionally turn.

We had limited time to test the prototypes at TriggrCon, but the glass was clear, the illumination was daylight-bright, and the designs were clean and functional. Sun Optics intends to price the sights under $300. They estimate the sights will be available before the end of 2019.

The TriggrCon 2019 show is open to the public during the second half of Friday, July 26, and all day on Saturday, July 27. Come on down to the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, Washington, if you’re nearby.
