North Carolina Match for the AR Enthusiast

Shooting matches geared towards AR enthusiasts are few and far between. Competitors can test their semi-auto skills in a friendly environment thanks to the Precision Rifle Series. The PRS arena is known for tiny targets and difficult courses of fire, but the Gas Gun Series is much more forgiving.

To shoot a gas gun match, you should have a rifle that shoots 1.5 MOA or better, a scope that is at least 10 power, a bipod, and a rear bag. The PRS community is welcoming to newcomers; don't be shy letting them know if it's your first match, other shooters will help you learn the ropes.

There are spots left for the Central Carolina Gas Gun match, the match director sent us the following information:

The First Central Carolina Gas Gun match will be held in Sanford NC July 21-22, 2018. This will be a faster-paced match (more shooting, less waiting) with minimal downtime due to the close proximity of the stages. It will be a fun course of fire, while still challenging all levels of shooters. Expect to shoot 20 stages with a round count of 196 rifle and 25 pistol, minimum. Most stages will allow for 3 attempts per target, with 3 stages being unlimited. Bring plenty of extra ammo.

Expect targets to be from 2 to 4 MOA. Eight-inch at 200 yards to 24-inch targets at 800. Target distances will be from 10 to 25 yards for pistol and 200 to 800 yards for rifle and all targets are steel. Don’t let the pistol targets scare you away, most pistol shots will be B/C zone (23-inch by 12-inch) targets. Make sure to bring your holster and maybe a mag pouch as pistol will be unlimited.

The match will have a practical nature to it, meaning it will utilize a variety of props from vehicles to barricades to natural improvised shooting positions. Gear for most stages will be unlimited– bring whatever you think you may want. Scoring of the Central Carolina Gas Gun match will be time plus, so your speed and accuracy will both be important.

There will be check-in/squad/confirm zero time from 3-6PM on Friday afternoon. The shooter's brief is on Saturday morning at 8 am. Shooting will wrap up from 3-4 on Saturday and start back Sunday at 8am. All stages should be done shooting by 1pm, with awards done by 3pm. This schedule is tentative due to the nature of matches. Lunch will be provided both days (Saturday and Sunday).

For flights look to fly into RDU. For lodging look in Sanford, NC (Apex and Southern Pines are also options but further away).

The theme of the gas gun series is to shoot fast AND accurate- the stages will bring that out while highlighting different facets of precision shooting at the same time.

More information will be put out to the registered shooters 2 weeks prior to the match.
