Learn More You couldn’t swing a dachshund in an Eighties or Nineties Hollywood action movie without hitting a roller-locking product from Heckler & Koch. The market void they left, caused by the ’89 Import Ban and the ’94 AWB, was haphazardly filled by a series of smaller companies, assembling foreign-sourced parts kits. Sadly, many of them were short-lived or of dubious quality, at least until the early in the current millennium. That’s when Connecticut-based JLD Enterprises rose to prominence assembling Portuguese and domestic parts into HK91 clones. From those early efforts evolved the PTR-91 and its eponymous manufacturing company. Growth continued into the current decade, even though the antigun legislative environment in the ironically-named Constitution State caused them to shake the dust of Connecticut off their sandals and decamp for a new facility in South Carolina. The new facility’s greatly-expanded manufacturing capabilities have finally rendered them free of the vagaries of foreign-sourced parts kits, which have always been of variable quality and availability. Having earlier expanded their original 7.62x51mm PTR-91 lineup to include the 7.62x39mm PTR-32, for 2019 the company’s catalog expands again, this time featuring the pistol-caliber PTR-9, available in a host of variants to mimic just about any version of the legendary MP5 you might care to. With a tri-lug barrel that is also threaded, the PTR-9 is ready to get suppressed. The classic HK-pattern diopter sights are complemented by a short stretch of Picatinny rail atop the receiver for the optic of your choice, a decided improvement over having to track down (and shell out for) a Hensoldt claw mount. The rear plate is available bare, and can accept HK fixed or collapsible buttstocks, and has threaded holes to accept a sling swivel or a length of Pic rail for attaching certain pistol braces or PDW-style stocks. With the variety of configurations, there’s one that’s going to be just right for defense, shooting PCC matches, or LARP’ing as your favorite ‘80s action hero at the range. Ho ho ho!
