¡Olé! The Burrito Pouch by Mean Gene Leather

Right from their inception, Mean Gene Leather (MGL) has been adding new twists to traditional items. They started with belts, blending the modern Cobra-buckle equipped gun belts with classic leather in their Barbarian. Pairing the Ares Gear Aegis with the same (read a review here) led to the Victory Aegis Belt. The newest offering from Mean Gene is another product that runs in the same vein: he calls it the Burrito Magazine Pouch.

You are, no doubt, familiar with open-topped pouches with side-retention.

Well this is just like that, but for grownups.

The Burrito Pouches are constructed of the same high quality leather as the MGL belts, but minus the extra embedded stiffener. This is application that addition would likely be superfluous overkill. As you no doubt surmised by the featured photo, like similar designs (the original designed by the namesake of MGL himself) you can fit a whole lot in these. No, you're probably not going to EDC hot sauce–but you could. The Burrito Pouch will retain a single stack or double stack magazine equally well. They also work well for flashlights, both bezel up and bezel down.

As opposed to relying on shock cord or another elastic mechanism, the Burrito Pouch uses special heat treated springs for active retention. The upside is that the Burrito Pouch maintains a refined look, the downside is that there isn't a mechanism to quickly adjust tention. That may or may not be an issue; only time will tell. That said, the springs themselves are relatively easy to remove if desired and no doubt can be replaced if you happen to wear one out.

Currently the only attachment method available for the Burrito Pouches are simple integral belt sliders. You have options for belt widths of 1.25″, 1.75″, and 2.25″. So if you want to hook one of up to a MOLLE rig (boy, wouldn't that look strange?) you'll have to rig something up or just be out of luck.

And of course, the back of each Buritto Pouch features the maker's mark. I know it may seem like a small thing, but I have come to appreciate hidden branding as opposed to the more overt that some companies seem to slather on everything.

MGL Burrito Pouches are available in an array of colors and accompanying thread patterns, with 168 potential combinations. Knowing my propensity to make everything grey, MGL sent out a pair in that hue (I've rolled and slightly darkened one of them). Speaking of which, because these pouches are leather, you should treat them like leather. Though some may take that as a negative, it also means that you can polish or age them just like any other leather goods.

My main question right now is: when do the rifle versions come out?
