First Look: Platatac All Theatre Patrol Pack

I have a pack fetish. Don't judge me.

As I continue to indulge that insatiable fetish, I have begun to sample gear from overseas. Specifically, from “down under.” I recently got my hands on the Platatac All Theatre Patrol Pack (ATP Pack) prior to attending the#TrailsFound media event in Arizona back in early September.

Above – ATP Pack use as a day pack, testing different configurations; there's more pack than most will need for single day use. Cover image; ATP Pack loaded with a unique KE Arms KE15 build, Sig Electro-Optics and other necessaries for a day spent in the saddle.

I'll be tossing this Australian made carry-all around the homestead quite a bit before providing a proper review, but I can certainly convey my initial impressions. After three days in the desert and several weeks on the road, I am cautiously optimistic this will continue to be a specific mission-driven pack. It is not going to be your everyday, keep all your electronic stuff well organized, EDC type of ruck. It seems to be more of a, “going to the field, stuff it, jam it, throw it around and not have shit fall out” 3-day pack.

I am not typically a fan of full MOLLE covering on my packs. I don't want to be “that guy.” So, I have to keep reminding myself this is was designed for specific needs and originally intended for the Australian military. With all the travel and Documerican Road proof of concept work I've been doing, it might just serve me well to have several external pouches scattered around the exterior. I'll test different configurations and report back in the full review. At a price well south of $200, this might be a great option for folks in the market for a versatile mid-tier pack.

More to follow.

Platatac spells out the core functions of the pack on their website thusly:

The Modular All Theatre Patrol Pack, or MAT Pack, is an excellent all rounder in the middle range of the field pack spectrum. It is small enough to take on a day patrol yet, with a few pouch additions, it can become large enough for longer missions. Standing tall and thin, it does not interfere with your freedom of movement or your centre of gravity.

Under the elasticised storm flap, there is a large zippered mesh pocket for quick access items, while the main compartment features double drawstring closure. Furthermore, there is an abundance of organisation solutions that will leave you salivating over the possibilities.

The shoulder harness features fully removable, neoprene lined straps with an ITW Fastex quick release system and adjustable sternum strap.

The back side of the pack is lined with thick and soft 3D Airmesh. Couple this with an internal aluminium frameset that can be moulded to your individual back shape, using the MAT Pack is as comfortable as pack work can get.

Furthermore, with a full MOLLE/PALS exterior, it can support any role. And with four compression straps, integrated drainage, an external quick access pocket, hydration tube routing and a reinforced drag handle this pack is perfect for any day patrol.

First things first. You said “thusly”. I used thusly in a sentence last week during a work discussion. Honestly, I felt like I had betrayed the redneck in me and Sam Houston ghost might show up and take away my citizenship card to the Republic of Texas. 😉
Nice initial review by the way, yeah it’s 6 yrs old and thusly this comment may just fall on blind eyes and deaf ears. I wonder how many times you’ve used “thusly” in these 6 yrs? More importantly, I wonder if Plantatac even makes this pack anymore. I kind of hope they do as I’ve been looking for a “weekender” with an internal frame that doesn’t weight as much as a bowling ball.
