The Ultimate Firearms Destination for the Gun Lifestyle

Preview – Multi-Tool Buyer’s Guide – MacGyver’s Got Nothing on These

Are you happy to see me or is that a multi-tool in your pocket?

As we know them today, multi-tools came into their own during the late 1980s and have revolutionized the way we work. These relatively small, versatile tools are capable of much more than the traditional pocketknife. Many are equipped with basic tools such as a file, a screwdriver, a knife blade, and pliers. In recent years, more specialized multi-tools have appeared, with some even being dedicated to a particular firearm. Here, we'll take a look at a few that we find indispensable at the range or the worksite.

Designed to be both practical and tactical, the Military Utility Tool is made by Leatherman, the originator of multi-tools. Needless to say, the company knew what it was doing when it designed this multi-tool. The MUT is large, but what do you expect when you have a hammer on board. The included bolt override tool especially caught our attention. The MUT can literally get you out of a jam in more ways than one.

The Series 2X is one of the best multi-tools we have ever seen for the AR shooter. It's perfectly suited to fix most any problem you may encounter when you're out in the field. It can even take care of your Glock. The heaviest of the tools we looked at, the Series 2X gives back for every single ounce. Outfitted with general-purpose tools as well, this well-crafted multitool is a winner.

A collaborative project between CRKT and Crimson Trace Corp., the Picatinny includes adjustment hex tools to adjust Picatinny rail-mounted, CTC laser sights. It also includes a rounded-head pin that can be used to clear failure-to-eject jams, as well as for small pin removals. This multi-tool is best suited for users of Crimson Trace lasers and those looking for a very lightweight tool.

The Field Expedient Cleaning Tool was designed to help maintain and clean AR-15/M16/M4 variants. A nice feature is that every tool locks in place when in use. With indispensable tools to help keep your gun in the fight, this multi-tool also stows away to become a very compact unit when not in use.

The PowerLock Explosive Ordinance Disposal's positioning of the crimper device is on the handle side, not in the plier jaw as with most other multitools. This allows the crimper to produce a strong, consistent, non-flaring crimp worthy of government fuse specifications, while requiring less hand pressure. The PowerLock EOD was designed with bomb disposal in mind, so it matters. If you're not in the EOD business, this multi-tool should be more than enough, whether you're an electrician or a handyman.
