RECOIL Issue 24 Web Contest – And there was much rejoicing

You read about it in our last issue. Here's your chance to win some excellent kit from 5.11 Tactical. We're offering up a sandstone backpack or a hard case; the pack? It's a Rush24. The case? Hard Case 42.

Yes, we know, in the print issue it says Rush25 — that's because the already outstanding 24 automatically gets bumped up a pay grade when it becomes affiliated with RECOIL.

We'd have made it a Rush250 but that seemed a little too cocky.

So, the hardcase is obviously designed to store your long gun, though it will also do yeoman work carrying around other items like violins or the extra prosthetic leg some of our more badass and motivated veteran friends show off occasionally in their IG videos. It's injected molded to be crush- and dust-proof and it's fully submersible — you can put this thing at the bottom of a pool if you're so inclined. A little rain damn sure isn't going to bother it. It'll resist a temperature range of –70°F to +160°F, has a unique 5.11 tongue and groove system and replaceable o-ring seal (that's what she said), an automatic breather valve that allows pressure equalization while preventing liquid ingress to Mil-STD-648C, and resistance to UV, Solvents, Corrosion and fungus per MIL-STD-810G. There are also overmolded handles at the top and side, trigger release latches for quick access and a stackable design for armory work or transport.

5.11 tells us their Hard Gun Cases exceed the Department of Homeland Security and Airline specifications for protective cases and that they're designed and manufactured in accordance with MIL-STD 810G and ATA Specification 300, Category 1.

The Rush24, one of the RUSH series, is 5.11's most popular pack. It has a large main compartment fitted with 3 interior mesh organizer compartments, a padded hydration pocket and a fleece-lined eyepro pocket up top where it's easy to get to. This latter feature may seem relatively innocuous but it's not. That thing has saved many a set of sunglasses from ruin. There are dual side storage compartments with glove-friendly double zip pull tab access, a large “stuff-it” pocket with an integrated drawcord so you can cinch it down and contoured compression straps. The whole thing is covered with wrap-around MOLLE/PALS, which of course works great with the 5.11 SlickStick system. This provides a lot of modularity, though as with many a young Joe or Jane you have to be careful with adding too much carrying capacity — if you put it there, you'll fill it, and pounds = pain on the move.
