It’s odd, but all of a sudden having a couple months’ worth of food, spare gas, first aid training and supplies, and the means to defend your tribe aren’t quite so outré among the bi – coastal elites anymore. Now, this could be that they don’t want to rub shoulders with the great unwashed in the produce aisle, but maybe it’s indicative of a wider shift in attitude.

While this crisis isn’t the apocalyptic plague it was predicted to be, mismanagement and hair-on-fire overreaction mean the second order effects are every bit as devastating to families and businesses. The mass media has a vested interest in splitting their audience into equally divided opposing camps, in order to blame the other for bad things happening and, in the process, sell more advertising.

It’s entirely laudable, however, to be concerned about the emergence of a novel pathogen, while at the same time making an informed assessment as to whether government interference and overreach is just as bad, or worse. If you’ve ever wondered which politicians are prepared to sell you out at the drop of a hat under the pretext of public safety, well, take look around.

If you’re wondering about your neighbors and their propensity to drop a dime at the merest hint of unapproved behavior, take note. And if you’ve encountered any of the millions of new gun owners who’ve woken up to the fact that law enforcement have no duty to protect them, and they’re their own first responder, then welcome them to the fold, no matter what their political allegiance.

In the past month, I’ve had the privilege to take three people to the range who’d never touched a firearm before, but who realized that no, the state doesn’t have a monopoly on violence, and that being the case, they’d better be able to exercise it on their own. All three were women. One wanted to look out for her kid, and two were life partners who wanted to look out for each other, so there’s hope …
