Learn More In this installment of Transport, Mike Glover and George Bell of Fieldcraft Survival take a drive in the Mercedes G Wagon and look at some of the most fundamental aspects of search of rescue. This particular G Wagon is a 1996 G320 German Spec Model, an imported version straight from Germany. It packs a ton of features like electronic lockers in the rear, center, and front, Dometic fridge, Comeup winch, and a couple inches of lift. Mike discusses a few important principles when it comes to search and rescue, which are intended to help avoid making a bad situation worse. The first principle centers around navigation-knowing where you are and keeping track of your progress via GPS. The second principle is communication: you must be able to communicate and have multiple communication methods. When it comes to communication, having a PACE plan is pivotal: Primary (cell phone), Alternate (2-way radio), Contingency (signaling mirror or flashlight), and Emergency (fire starter) means of communication. In order to put the G Wagon to the test, Mike and George do a dry run of a lost camper in a mountainous area. After setting out, they quickly encounter their first obstacle, a rutted-out area with a high side angle that the G Wagon handles with ease. Most importantly, it was able to do this slowly. Being able to slowly navigate through rough terrain is an important aspect of search and rescue because it reduces stress, enables the passenger to focus on searching, and reduction of engine noise. The G Wagon is designed to handle all types of terrain and is perfectly suited for search and rescue operations in almost any landscape. With a wide array of features designed for access, without sacrificing comfortability, this G Wagon is a great tool for searchers and could be the essential lifeline needed for any stranded in the wilderness.
