Guns AfterSHOT: Up and Comer Roughneck Firearms Nathan Schultz February 2, 2016 Join the Conversation SHOT Show is definitely the end all be all for weapons expo. All the latest and greatest gear from all the major manufacturers from around the world. A lot of the time people will miss a small up and coming company tucked away in the “dungeon” of the show (the bottom level, with the concrete floors and the strange smells) or being showcased in a collocated both booth. I found one such company among the sea of guns and gear: Roughneck Firearms. I found them partnered up with Froglube. Roughneck is a small company based in Crosby, Texas. Don't worry if you've never heard of it. I'm from Texas and I had to look it up. Roughneck is a custom rifle manufacture that builds each rifle to the customer's exact specifications. They appear to have great attention to detail and provide specifications for lowers, uppers, and handguards machined just for them. Roughneck's bread and butter though is their barrel, which is hand turned to improve accuracy. Roughneck says it prides itself on quality and accuracy over quantity. The barrels they offer are, 14.7 in. mid length gas system with a pinned and welded comp, 16 in. rifle length gas system, and an 18 in. Mark 12 that is real as can be. They also are doing the AR-10s for you 308 fans. One rifle that Roughneck had on display has 8,500 documented rounds through it without, they tell us, a single malfunction. Yes, they have accounted for every single round that has gone through the rifle. Roughneck Firearms may be a small company but they take pride in their size and say they won't a single rifle leave the shop unless it's perfect. (That's even with breaking in the barrel.) There is an old saying that everything is bigger in Texas. That is true but, sometimes big things can come from the small guys. ##### Follow us on Instagram, @RECOILmagazine and keep an eye out for these hashtags: #recoilmagazine, #recoil, #shotshow2016, #mediadayattherange and especially #recoilSHOT2016. What is the NSSF SHOT Show? The NSSF SHOT Show (Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show) and Conference is an annual event held by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Typically attended by thousands of people from all 50 states and over a hundred countries, it is (quite rightfully) described as the “…world's premier exposition of combined firearms, ammunition, law enforcement, cutlery, outdoor apparel, optics, and related products and services. Imagine the Worlds' Fair, but packed with everything from mini-guns and every breed of body armor, bows and boots; from eye pro and ear pro to optics and ordnance, socks to swords…you get the idea. If you'd like to see a sampling of the companies who will be showing at this year's SHOT, there's a live map right here, though it doesn't reflect the organizations set up elsewhere, in hotel suites, etc. View imagery from our coverage of last year's SHOT Show right here.
